High Risk Medication
We provide advice and counselling to patients and their representatives if they are on high-risk medication. Please ask to speak to a member of the pharmacy team. Please note the below information points if you are on any of the following.
- Methotrexate –The usual dose is for Methotrexate to be taken once weekly, unless it specifically states otherwise by the prescriber. Always double check the strength. Please report any side effects/adverse reactions immediately to the pharmacy team.
- Opioids – Always take the prescribed dose given as there is a possibility of overdose and dependency. If you feel your dose is inadequate, please speak to the pharmacy team.
- Lithium – Patients should have regular blood test to check for dosage adjustments and keep their record booklets up to date.
- Sodium Valproate – Female patients should speak to the pharmacy before taking this medication for the first time as taking valproate during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Also, male patients should seek advice as it can cause infertility in men. Always ask for advice before commencing on this medication.
Medication Storage
Please follow the instructions on the label provided with your medication regarding the safe storage of medication. Patients are advised to keep all medication, especially high-risk medicines, in a secure area away from children; Patients are also counselled on keeping fridge item in the appropriate storage. Medication should generally be kept in a cool dry area away from heat, air, moisture, and light. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
